That faint refill sound can become expensive faster than most homeowners expect. Look inside the tank after it has refilled. If water is visibly running into the open overflow tube, the tank is overfilling. This is typically a fill valve adjustment or fill valve failure, not a flapper problem.
Most modern fill valves have an adjustment mechanism that changes the shutoff height. A small adjustment may correct the issue, but it is not always the right long-term answer. If the valve cannot hold its setting or continues to run after adjustment, replacement is usually the more dependable repair.
The small refill tube should also be secured above the overflow tube, not pushed down inside it. If that tube is inserted too far, it can siphon water out of the tank and cause repeated refilling.
A damaged flush valve or tank components
Sometimes the flapper is in good condition, but the plastic or brass flush valve seat beneath it is cracked, rough, or damaged. Because the flapper cannot seal against an uneven surface, water continues leaking into the bowl.
This repair can require removing the tank from the bowl to replace the flush valve assembly. The work is more involved than changing a flapper, and overtightening tank bolts or fittings can crack porcelain. This is a sensible point to call a professional rather than risk turning a small running-toilet repair into a leak or broken fixture.
A Simple Dye Test Can Confirm a Leak
When the cause is not obvious, a dye test can help determine whether water is leaking from the tank into the bowl. Turn off any automatic cleaning tablet system first, since colored cleaners can make the results difficult to read.
Add several drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. Do not flush. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes, then look in the bowl. If color appears in the bowl, water is leaking past the flapper or flush valve seal.

Do not use a brick, heavy object, or improvised device inside the tank to change its water level. These shortcuts can damage components, interfere with flushing, and hide the actual problem.
